What Reeve Waud’s $1.05 Billion Fundraise Tells Us About Healthcare Private Equity

Healthcare-focused private equity funds were attracting outsized LP interest by early 2016. The Affordable Care Act had expanded insurance coverage. Behavioral health was experiencing parity-driven demand. Aging demographics supported provider services across the board. The money followed the macro.

Waud Capital Partners’ Fund IV, which closed at $1.056 billion in Feb. 2016, captured that wave, and Reeve Waud’s 23-year healthcare track record gave LPs the conviction to oversubscribe the vehicle by 41% in 12 weeks (PE Professional).

The Thesis LPs Were Underwriting

Reeve B. Waud had spent over two decades building healthcare platforms through Waud Capital Partners. Acadia Healthcare, which he founded in 2005, went public in 2011 and had become one of the nation’s largest behavioral health operators by Fund IV’s close. Center for Vein Restoration grew from 11 to 44 clinics under WCP’s ownership before exiting in early 2016.

WCP’s healthcare platforms averaged 10+ add-on acquisitions during the hold period, and realized investments showed average revenue growth exceeding 400% (Waud Capital Partners). For LPs looking to deploy capital into fragmented healthcare services (where buy-and-build execution drove returns) Waud Capital had the receipts.

What the Numbers Signal

The $900 million in LP commitments, plus $156 million from Reeve Waud and affiliates, showed institutional conviction that healthcare PE would continue producing returns. Investors like the Arizona State Retirement System and the New York State Teachers’ Retirement System were making multi-million-dollar bets on the sector through WCP’s fourth fund.

WCP IV’s oversubscription, speed, and LP retention rate all pointed toward deep trust, earned over 23 years, four fund cycles, 185+ completed investments, and a flagship company that went from startup to NASDAQ. Reeve Waud once told Crain’s that he needs “a convincing reason why a company will thrive.” LPs appeared to have applied the same standard to Waud Capital Partners itself, and reached their answer quickly.
